Five Minutes With Jill Schildhouse.

Jill Schildhouse – Freelance Writer

1. Tell us about your current occupation and how you landed such a fabulous job.⁣

I've been in print and digital publishing for 21 years, switching between editor and writer roles on staff at various publications in Chicago and Phoenix. In 2017, I struck out on my own as a full-time freelancer and now consistently write for more than a dozen national publications. Additionally, I provide content marketing and ghostwriting services to various brands and serve as a freelance editor at Reader's Digest and Oxygen magazines.

2. What's your best advice for PR professionals?

Take the time to build meaningful relationships with media, as that effort will come back to you tenfold. We remember publicists who make our jobs easier ... and we also remember (and avoid!) the ones who don't. If you're really keen on working with a journalist, follow their careers. Know who they write for, what topics they cover, what they're posting on social ... with all of today's tools and resources, it's fairly easy (albeit time-consuming) to find out these details and mention them in your pitches.

3. What's a fun fact about you?

I've been to 36 countries and the second Covid goes away, I'll be adding to that list. My wanderlust is currently stuck in overdrive!

4. Tell us about your favorite nonprofit and why.

Arizona Schnauzer Rescue will always hold a special place in my heart for allowing me to adopt a sweet mini schnauzer many years ago. Mason was the love of my life. He has since passed, but the good work this group does to help protect schnauzers in need is so important. They even host the cutest schnauzer picnic each year and it's the most adorable thing you've ever experienced.

5. What's your favorite meal, movie, or vacation spot?

My favorite vacation spot is a toss up between Kauai and Italy. I've been to each a handful of times and they are both magical in their own ways. As such, my favorite meal switches between poke bowls and pasta with gelato.
