Five Minutes With Jamie Sanders.
Jamie Sanders, Fashion and Beauty Writer, Editor-in-Chief of The Beauty of Life
1.What is your current occupation?
I'm a fashion, beauty and lifestyle writer based in Los Angeles. I have a journalism degree from Indiana University, and always envisioned myself working in magazines. If 13 Going on 30 had existed when I was a kid, I’d definitely have wanted to be Jenna Rink! These days, I do both copywriting and commerce/editorial writing within those niches — sometimes I've focused more on one, sometimes the other, sometimes it's an even split!
On the editorial side, my work has appeared in outlets like InStyle, Well+Good, Shape, People, U.S. News, SheKnows, Byrdie, WWD, Today, and Saatva’s Sleep Enlightened blog. My copywriting clients include Ralph Lauren, Benefit, Tatcha, Dermalogica, JustFab, Fabletics, Splendid, the list goes on!
2. What's your best advice for PR professionals?
First, beware of sending too many follow-up emails. Writers’ inboxes can get bogged down very quickly, even without multiple follow-ups. If I am interested in your pitch, I will get back to you, usually within a week (depending on my work schedule). Honestly, though, sending too many emails — especially in a very short time frame — can turn me away from wanting to work with you down the line.
Second, I always love putting faces with names! If we’re in the same city, it’s great to get coffee or cocktails and get to know each other beyond our screens.
3. What's a fun fact about you?
I grew up doing musical theater and performing in show choir — it was major in Cleveland, Ohio! I absolutely loved it, and got to perform some pretty amazing roles (like Annie, the Narrator in Joseph…, and Kim MacAfee in Bye Bye Birdie) — but, ultimately, I decided to go the writing route. I still sing in my car, though!
4. Tell us about your favorite nonprofit and why it's important to you.
I have always been a proud Jew. In the wake of October 7, though, I have become much more connected to my heritage and have found it imperative to try and combat antisemitism in any way possible. I really like the work of StandWithUs, which works to educate people around the world about Israel and fight antisemitism.
5. Tell us about your favorite meal, movie, and / or vacation spot.
I go to Palm Springs at least once a year — more, if I can help it! I love the relaxed feel, the bold colors, and yes, even the extreme heat (I’ve even gone in 120-degree August). It’s only a couple of hours from Los Angeles, and there’s always something new to do, a new place to eat or get cocktails, and a fun pool to take a dip. Seriously, what’s not to love?
